Biography

The artist Dr. Gerges Said Mikhael Mansour Algawly (born 1971, Al-Gawly, Assiut) is a sculptor, Professor and Head of the Sculpture Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Minya University. He holds a Master's in Sculpture (2001) and a Doctorate in Philosophy of Arts (2008).

His public work spans thirty years of Egyptian civic and religious custom works. In 2023 he completed the largest bronze statue in Egypt — a nine-metre, ten-ton Virgin Mary crowning the Monastery of Dronka in Assiut. In 2020 he sculpted the Monument to the Egyptian Martyrs of Libya: twenty-one reinforced-concrete figures in the village of Al-Aour, Samalut.

Algawly reinterprets Pharaonic form for the contemporary hand: full-scale recreations of Tutankhamun's funerary furniture, the Ramesside series, the Amarna period — including an eleven-metre Akhenaten at Minya University (2001) — and the reconstruction of the Meritamon statue in Sharqia granite (2005).

His portraiture — of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, of Taha Hussein, of Mustafa Kamel — is held by the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo, the Military College Museum, and the Hassan El-Sharq Museum in Minya.

He has curated fourteen solo exhibitions since 2011, and his work has been covered by Al-Ahram, Watani, Al-Masry Al-Youm, RT Arabic, Al-Arabiya, The Tablet, and reported in Italy through the Italo-Egyptian Eridanus Association.
